Truck bed liners protect your pickup from the damage that any kind of hauling causes. One option for liners is the plastic drop in liner. Here's how plastic liners are better than other types and what you should look for in the best …

Lifting your Jeep Wrangler can be an expensive project that’s also time consuming, especially if you’ve never installed a lift before. Often times, customers will ask if there’s a cheaper or faster way to get 33-inch tires on their Wrangler YJ without parting with the cash for a complete suspension lift. The answer to that is yes, and while it may not be a setup that will perform as well off-road as a full suspension lift, it will certainly make your Jeep Wrangler more trail-worthy than the factory Wrangler setup.

A traditional suspension lift kit for the 1987-95 Jeep Wrangler YJ primarily consists of four leaf springs and installation hardware. The amount of arch in the leaf springs determines how much lift will be attained once they’re installed on the Jeep. Separating the old springs from the axle, then removing them from the vehicle, and then reversing this process to install the new springs can take some effort and is difficult to accomplish alone. Installing a suspension lift kit is not an exact science, but there will certainly be times when you’ll have to get “creative” during the installation process in order to get some pieces to fit and align properly before they can be bolted down. This is where some people cringe and justify that it’s better to spend less money to install a simpler lift that takes less time.

Fortunately, a 3-inch lift on the Wrangler YJ can be attained with a 2-inch body lift combined with a 1-inch shackle lift.

What is a body lift? A body lift is a set of spacers that are placed at the mounting points where the Jeep tub (or body) is bolted to the frame (or chassis). The idea is to use these spacer to raise the body away from the frame, hence the term “body lift”.

What are shackles and what is a shackle lift? The shackles are devices that attach the leaf springs the the frame. They pivot when the spring gets extended or compressed. A shackle lift is a set of replacement shackles that are longer than the factory shackles. By replacing the factory shackles with longer shackles, the frame is moved away from the axle which results in lift, hence the term “shackle lift”. A 2-inch shackle will net approximately 1-inch of lift.

The typical 3-inch Jeep Wrangler YJ suspension lift with shocks can cost anywhere from $600 to $900 (depending on the manufacturer) and take anywhere from five to 10 hours to install (depending on installer experience). A 2-inch body lift for the Wrangler YJ can cost between $100 and $150 and takes approximately two hours to install. A 1-inch shackle lift for the Wrangler YJ can cost between $50 and $100 and takes approximately one to two hours to install.

By combining a 2-inch body lift and a 1-inch shackle lift, you can attain a 3-inch lift on your 1987-95 Jeep Wrangler YJ for a budget cost of about 1/4 to 1/3 the price of a suspension lift and have it installed in less time and still fit the same size tires. In fact, the money you save can be applied toward a new set of wheels and tires.

Jeep owners know that when you own a Jeep and you want to modify it you should, Just Empty Every Pocket. It seems like everything you do to a Jeep costs and arm and a leg. This is especially true when you talk about suspension lifts. Except for one type of lift, the body lift. Read along and learn a little about this type of affordable Jeep lift kit.

A body lift involves placing pucks between the frame and body of a vehicle. For this reason it is only available for vehicles with a frame and not unibody vehicles. This means that Jeep Wranglers and CJ’s can take advantage of this lit but not Cherokees and Grand Cherokees. Body lifts generally cost in the neighborhood of a hundred dollars which makes it a pretty cheap mod that just about anyone can tackle. So whats involved in installing one. First you must loosen all of the body mount bolts. A rust penetrant usually helps here. Next you remove the bolts from the mounts on one side of the vehicle and jack up that side of the vehicle. Then you add the lift pucks, lower the body and reinstall the bolts. Repeat this for the other side and you are just about done. To finish it off you will have to adjust any linkages that might need lengthening. The kit will probably come with new brackets to do this. Thats it, you are done.

As you can see, this is a pretty easy and quick way to get a little more lift out of your Jeep. So if you are in need of a little more tire clearance on the cheap, give it some thought.

Why lift your Jeep? More height means more clearance for dealing with obstacles while offroading. It allows you to run larger tires, which also helps with conquering offroad challenges. Still another reason is that many folks just feel that a lifted Jeep with larger tires looks better, and I certainly agree with them. The added height and larger tires just give a Jeep a better more pronounced profile.

No matter the reason for lifting your Jeep, there are a number of ways to go about it. Before you pick which one is right for you, you’ll need to make some decisions along the way. First, you’ll need to decide on what you’re looking to accomplish with the lift. Is it simply for show, or is it for go? Serious rock crawling anyone? Second, determine just how high you want to go. Looking for a little height for some mild wheeling or are you really serious about this height thing? Third, select the type of lift to use. Finally, install the lift or have it installed.

The basic methods for lifting a Jeep are Suspension Lift Kits, Body Lifts Kits, Shackle Lifts, Spring-Over-Axle Conversions, and Coil Spring Spacers. Jeep shackle lifts and coil spring spacers typically result in a maximum increase of 2 inches. Coil spring spacers are just what they say: spacers that are inserted under the base of the coil spring, resulting in lifting the springs higher. Shackle lifts are comprised of leaf spring shackles that are longer and lift the frame higher from the leafs. Both of these kits are rather inexpensive methods, but if you’re looking for more than a couple of inches, you’ll need to look elsewhere.

Spring-Over-Axle conversion kits allow you to change the location of the leaf spring from beneath the axle to sit on top of it. They’ll usually result in a lift of 4 inches or more. This can be increased by the size of springs you use with the over axle kit. Use of these can cause cantering, and steering linkage and driveline issues which must be addressed. It can become a little complicated for the less mechanically inclined among us (I’m one of them!). It will definitely change the handling of the rig. While the spring-over-axle conversion kits are rather inexpensive when compared to suspensions lifts, there is a good bit of time and money spent on fixing the issues it creates, which needs to be taken into consideration when assessing the costs of your various options.

With Body Lift Kits you basically unbolt the body from the frame, and place manufactured blocks between the Jeep’s body and the rolling chassis. This raises the body of your Jeep but doesn’t directly increase the clearance of your undercarriage. The body lift does allow you to run larger tires, which will increase your Jeep’s clearance.

Suspension lift kits will directly increase the clearance of a Jeep. They call for installing taller suspension components (higher lift springs and longer recoil shocks). These systems deliver lift, better articulation, and better offroad handling. Unfortunately, they are the most expensive of the lift options, but they deliver the best handling performance.

When it comes down to choosing a lift, you’ll need to determine why you’re lifting the vehicle, and how much you’re willing to pay for it. If you’re only looking to add a couple of inches and you want the lift just for looks, a body kit, coil-spring-spacers or lift shackles may be just what the doctor ordered. If you’re looking to build a Jeep that is more offroad capable then you should look at suspension lift systems.

Many serious offroaders combine the suspension lift with a body lift for additional height. Installation of any of these lifting methods will usually change the handling of a vehicle. They all raise the center of gravity and will, therefore, affect side-to-side handling and cornering. This can be addressed by adding wider tires along with the lift. Depending on the type and size of kit you install and the model of your Jeep, you may need to install a dropped Pitman arm, longer control arms, longer brake hoses, a transfer case drop, and/or a CV drive shaft and slip yoke eliminator kit (due to a change of the angle of the drive train on TJs and some Cherokees). It’s important to not cut corners when lifting your Jeep. Why spend the money on a lift just to compromise the handling performance and face potentially serious wear and tear issues with key components? Do it right the first time and it will serve you in the long run.

Whatever system you select, the one thing for sure is that the added height will help give your Jeep that rugged tough look most of us seem to prefer.

In vehicle customization, leveling kits fly under the radar as far as off road vehicles are concerned. Yet while suspension lifts may hoard the limelight as flashier and more crucial pieces of off road hardware, leveling lift kits play an essential role as well.

Before anything else, it should be understood that this not a supplementary upgrade, but rather a modification that can have a significant impact on vehicle performance and reliability, and thus deserve a fair amount of attention.

Think of leveling kits in this way: sure, vehicles needing leveling lift kits can still drive without them. But then again, a blind man may know how to drive a car, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that he should.

Many probably know the purpose and benefits, but rarely does one possess a more intimate understanding. Herein, we’ll attempt to broaden that understanding with a closer look.

Why Leveling Kits?

With so many lift-related components out there, it’s easy to get confused about where they fit in. In their base concept, leveling lift kits work similarly to body lift kits in both application and function, but with a slight difference.

On one hand, a body lift is meant to provide lift for a vehicle, allowing it to add larger tires, or simply offer that lifted look at a lower price and less installation work than a full suspension lift.

On the other hand, leveling kits serve the same purpose, but only for either the front or rear end of a vehicle primarily for the purpose of evening out a vehicle’s stance.

With this in mind, leveling out your vehicle come in handy in cases where suspension modifications or uneven weight distribution causes one end of a vehicle to sag. For instance, a vehicle with a considerable amount of added weight on the front end due to a bumper, winch, or other components is the perfect candidate for front leveling lift kits.

As stated earlier, leveling kits aren’t a necessary upgrade to continue operating your vehicle; however, neglecting an imbalance in ride level can impact a variety of crucial factors, such as handling, tire or suspension wear, and even plain old aesthetic appeal.

They offer alternative functions as well, such as some extra inches for tire clearance, or improved rear end wheel travel during towing or hauling jobs.

Additionally, leveling out your ride is simple and effective to operate, and also relatively easy to install.

Know Your Vehicle

Leveling kits differ slightly from suspension and body lifts in their application. Although there are essentially 3 different types of leveling lift kits, the one you need is entirely dependent upon your vehicle. There’s simply no way around this.

Knowing what type fits your vehicle can make it much easier to shop for one, and also help you get accustomed to exactly what’s involved in installation.

Types of Leveling Kits

As stated earlier, there are 3 primary types of kits that work for most major vehicles, plus block kits, which are a kind of specialized leveling kit. The type of kit you need is entirely vehicle-specific, and can be easily determined by contacting your manufacturer.

It should be noted that you should not confuse these with air leveling kits, which can be easily viewed as being a suitable replacement for leveling lift kits. This is most definitely not the case, and air-based versions should never be considered as an alternative to complete truck leveling kits.

Strut Extensions

For vehicles that use a coilover strut in their front suspension, which usually includes late-model half-ton trucks and SUVs, strut extension leveling lift kits are the way to go.
Strut extension leveling kits function off the basic concept of adding a spacer on top of factory struts. This process is typically a simple and cost-effective method of adding lift, especially since it requires no modification of factory parts, and can also be easily removed.

Torsion Keys

On its own, a torsion bar can actually be adjusted to provide lift without any additional modifications; however, stock torsion keys don’t usually have the strength and sturdiness to safely maintain the lift.

Aftermarket torsion keys provide a solution. These reinforced keys are built stronger and more stable than factory units, as they are specifically designed as both a safe and effective way to maintain lift upon adjusting a torsion bar.

A torsion key adjuster tool is a recommended purchase to go along with torsion key-style kits.

Coil Spacers

Coil spacer leveling kits are similar to strut extensions in concept, but slightly different in application. Whereas strut extensions add a spacer on top of factory struts, coil spacer leveling lift kits instead add them to the top of factory spring buckets. These modifications will help your truck maintain a factory stance and OEM ride quality.
In order to compensate for the additional lift, some coil spacer applications will require the installation of shock extensions, which are usually included with these leveling kits.

Block Kits

Not to be confused with standard leveling lift kits, block kits are the preferred method of altering the ride height of the rear end of a vehicle, whether you’re looking for a rear-high stance, or just want to put the rake back into your truck for hauling or towing.
